17th of Tammuz
The 17th of Tammuz (Shiv’ah Asar B’Tammuz) is a minor Jewish fast day commemorating the breach of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple. It marks the beginning of the three-week mourning period leading up to Tisha B’Av. Like other minor fasts, Tzom Tammuz begins at dawn (first light) and ends at nightfall (full dark).
17 Tammuz 5778/2017 is Tuesday, July 11.
At Tikvat Israel it will be observed during morning (Shacharit at 9:00 am) and afternoon (Minchah at 7:30 pm) services. The Torah will be read at both services, and a haftarah, from the Book of Isaiah, will be chanted at Minchah. Due to the lateness of sunset, there will be no evening service (Ma’ariv) on July 11.
