17th of Tammuz
The 17th of Tammuz (Shiv’ah Asar B’Tammuz) is a minor Jewish fast day commemorating the breach of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple. It marks the beginning of the three-week mourning period leading up to Tisha B’Av. Like other minor fasts, Tzom Tammuz begins at dawn (first light) and ends at nightfall (full dark). As the date 17 Tammuz this year coincides with Shabbat, when minor fast days are not observed, the fast day will be observed on the following day, Sunday, July 5.
At Tikvat Israel it will be observed during Sunday morning (Shacharit at 9:00 am) and afternoon (Minchah at 7:30 pm) services. The Torah will be read at both services, and a haftarah, from the Book of Isaiah, will be chanted at Minchah. Due to the lateness of sunset, there will be no evening service (Ma’ariv) on July 5.
