Books, books, books…

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

What a lot of fun was had today, by about a dozen volunteers, coordinated by Nancy Matheson. Our mission: to unpack about 50 boxes of assorted books on all manner of Jewish topics, sort them alphabetically, and shelve them in the storage area behind the stage in our social hall.

We had several professional librarians, who offered sage advice on sorting methods, and were valuable resources when we ran into perplexing problems of “Who actually is the author of this book??” And, of course, it was a constant challenge not to get distracted by the interesting titles, and the urge to sit down and start reading!!

The books will ultimately be shipped out to various Jewish communities throughout the world, in the U.S. and abroad, where the thirst for knowledge and learning is strong and the resources are limited. It’s always humbling to realize that we have such a wealth around us, and to recall that others have little, but yet, keep alive a potent desire to learn and grow in their Jewish knowledge and practice.

So, Yasher Koach to all who helped out. Take a look at some photos of the volunteers on our photo gallery here: http://tikvatisrael.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=582

Kabbalat Shabbat Services with Instruments

Monday, June 16th, 2008

On June 20th, Cantor Helzner will again lead her popular and joyful “Kabbalat Shabbat with Instruments” at Tikvat Israel. Read what a congregant wrote of the experience:

We would like to express how much we enjoyed attending the Shabbat with instruments last month. We found the music very uplifting and spiritual. It was a great way to usher in Shabbat and reconnect with the synagogue. We hadn’t been to services in a while and it was wonderful to be there and to feel a part of the Tikvat Israel community again. We are planning on making this service a regular part of our schedule. It gave us a great lift.

The cantor gave us a recording of “Magen Avot” which she made during a rehearsal, to give you a taste of what to expect.  You can either listen to it by clicking on “Play Now” or the “Play in Popup”, or click the “Download” link to play on your mp3 player.  All our audio clips are also available by subscribing to the Tikvat Israel Blog on iTunes!
