Tikvat Israel Congregation. Dedicated to The Jewish People, The Jewish Faith, The Jewish Future.

Adult Programs and Activities

One of Tikvat Israel's many strengths is the desire of our members to become involved in synagogue life. We are fortunate in being able to attract members who not only want to join our congregation, but who also want to join in.

Opportunities for participation are numerous and diverse, encompassing every aspect of synagogue life-from the religious to the social. This wide range of activities enriches the spiritual, emotional, creative, and intellectual lives of our members, both individually and collectively.

Social Action Projects

The Tikvat Israel community is committed to undertaking and carrying out projects to help repair the world and make it a better place (tikkun olam). Ongoing social action projects include:
  • Stepping Stones Shelter—Congregants prepare and deliver meals for shelter occupants (Contact Andi Kronzek)
  • Potomac Valley Nursing Home—Congregants bring naches to Jewish residents by conducting Shabbat and holiday programs, playing games and reading aloud to them. (Contact Roma Sohn or Rebecca Salon)
  • Baltimore Road Cleanup—Through Montgomery County's Adopt-A-Road Program, Tikvat Israel takes responsibility for keeping a portion of Baltimore Road clean and free of litter (Contact Stu and Molly Turkewitz)
  • Literacy Tutoring – Under the direction of the Greater Washington Jewish Coalition for Literacy, volunteers spend an hour each week with a second-grader at Meadow Hall Elementary School working on reading fluency and comprehension (Contact Ellen Eisner)

One-time projects and activities that congregants can help plan and implement include the annual blood drive (scheduled this year for Nov 5); periodic food drives (the next one scheduled around the High Holidays); and activities supporting Darfur.

To suggest and/or take a leadership role on a new social action project, please contact Robbi and Larry Cohen, co-chairs of the Social Action Committee .

Experience the warmth and friendship of our community by participating in one or more of our many social and educational activities.
