Tikvat Israel Religious School - Policies

Attendance: Regular attendance is imperative to benefit fully from the program of instruction. Missed assignments and class work should be made up promptly. Parents should make special arrangements with the Education Director in the event of an extended absence.

Dress Code: Students should dress neatly and appropriately; boys are required to wear kippot.

Student Behavior and Discipline: Students must behave with the courtesy and respect appropriate to the classroom and with special regard for classes being held in the synagogue. Steps in the disciplinary process may include: (1) a teacher-student conference, (2) an Education Director-student conference, and (3) a family-teacher conference or a family-Education Director conference. If the problem is not resolved, suspension and/or expulsion may be considered. Students are responsible for any class work missed due to disciplinary action.

Illness and Medication: Please inform us of any allergies or medical concerns because your child's safety and health are our primary concern. If your child becomes ill while at Religious School, you will be contacted to pick him/her up. We cannot give any internal medication to a student, but will dispense bandages and ice packs if needed. In the event of an emergency, we will try to contact a parent; if a parent in unreachable, we will contact the emergency name listed on your child's registration form. In an extreme emergency, an ambulance will be called to take the child to a hospital emergency room.

Homework/Assessment: Teachers may assign homework and may choose to test the students' knowledge of the material covered in class. Students in third through sixth grades are assessed as they progress through the tefilah curriculum; an audio tape or CD is available to help with home study of the grade level prayers.

Tzedakah: Students are encouraged to bring a monetary contribution to Religious School. Tzedakah will be donated to a charitable organization chosen by each class.

Parking Lot Safety: To maximize safety and facilitate a smooth flow of traffic, parents are required to park their cars and see that their children arrive safely at the doors of the Education Wing. Parents must pick up their children in the Education Wing after school.

Snow/Inclement Weather Policy: We follow the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) system for snow closings; if public schools are closed all day or students are sent home early, there will be no Religious School. On Sundays, please listen to WTOP (1500 AM) starting at 7:00 AM or call the Religious School office at 301-424-4396.

Parent Communication: Back to School Night in the fall provides an opportunity to meet your children's teacher(s). Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled at mid-term for students in grades 3-7; the Education Director is happy to schedule additional conferences upon request. Progress reports are sent to parents of K-7th grade students at mid-term and the end of the school year.
