"BEFORE BEAUFORT: THE EARLY FILMS OF JOSEPH CEDAR"
CAMPFIRE (2004)
The annual Israeli Film Festival at Tikvat Israel will feature a pair of movies created by Joseph Cedar, a decorated Israeli film director.
Cedar received international attention with the release of his 2007 film "Beaufort" (shown at TI's 2009 Israeli film event). The roots of his craft provide thoughtful treatment of the delicate issues of Israeli society. Israeli film critic Yair Rave said Cedar's films "merge the Israeli spirit ... with the universal cinematic codes."
Tikvat Israel secured screening rights this winter for his two earliest films, both award winners, which examine religiosity in the military and fervor among settlers, as two sides of the same coin and how Israelis view their relationship with their nation and HaShem.
The first film shown to be shown on Jan 16 (or snow date Jan 30), is "Time of Favor" - read more about "Time of Favor" here.
"Campfire" is the story of a young widow and a mother of two beautiful teenage daughters, who wants to join the founding group of a new religious settlement in the West Bank. But first she must convince the acceptance committee she is worthy. The behavior of her daughters becomes a point of contention as the mother grapples with her own feelings about joining the settlement and mothering her children.
Moderated by Dr. Eric Zakim, Coordinator, Program in Modern Hebrew Language and Literature, University of Maryland
Screening begins at 7:45 p.m. in the Tikvat Israel Sanctuary, followed by refreshments and a discussion in the Social Hall.
