TI Seeks Literacy Volunteers.........posted Jan 11, 2006
Tikvat Israel congregants are tutoring 2nd-graders at Meadow Hall Elementary School on Twinbrook Drive (around the corner from the synagogue) as part of a literacy program sponsored by the Greater Washington Jewish Coalition for Literacy.
Tutors work with their students for an hour each week using a structured tutoring program originally developed in Israel.
There is now an opportunity to join this program. No prior tutoring experience is required. Volunteers will be given a two-hour training class in January and then will be assigned to a Meadow Hall 2nd-grade pupil who needs help with reading fluency and comprehension. The final training session this month is scheduled for Jan. 31 at the Montgomery County Board of Education offices on Hungerford Drive in Rockville.
"This is an ideal opportunity for congregants who are either self-employed, retired or stay-at-home moms," says Ellen Eisner, TI's coordinator of tutors for the Social Action Committee. "The only requirement is the commitment to meet with your student on a weekly basis for the remainder of the school year (illness and short vacations excepted)."
Tutors select whatever day of the week is convenient, but the tutoring must be done in the morning, starting at either 10 or 10:30 a.m.
Call Ellen Eisner at 301-598-0635 for further information.
