High School Graduates Feted at TI

TI traditionally honors its high school graduates at a Shabbat service each spring. On May 13, 19 seniors at high schools throughout Montgomery County were honored. Eleven of them led portions of the Shabbat morning service. In addition, 12 families sponsored a Kiddush in the social hall following the service.

Jeff Smith will be waving the Tikvat Israel banner when he competes against the Washington area's best formal talkers in the district round of the Toastmasters International speech and evaluation competition on May 20 at the Washington Hilton in Silver Spring.

Lowenfeld Plaque Unveiled in Youth Lounge

Melissa Apter, president of Tikvat Israel's USY chapter, wrote a moving three-page thank you speech to recognize congregant Mort Lowenfeld for awarding her the Charlotte Lowenfeld scholarship last year. The annual scholarship award provides funds for a USY member at TI to attend an international convention.

TI congregant Arlene Berger is going back to school — this time to become a certified religious leader. A veteran Jewish educator, Arlene was formally accepted this spring into the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, Pa., a Philadelphia suburb.

TI Stages Moving Yom Hashoah Remembrance

In silence and wearing paper clips on their lapels, necklines and pockets, some 225 members of Tikvat Israel and the Silver Spring Presbyterian Church emerged from TI's social hall after viewing the documentary film "Paper Clips." For them, and others who see this 90-minute film, the common paper clip is transformed into a powerful symbol of remembrance of the millions of lives lost in the Holocaust.
