Extraordinary and ordinary. Surprising, too -- just as I had expected it would be -- and familiar in ways I had not quite imagined.
That was my experience as one participant in a 15-member delegation from Tikvat Israel that spent Shabbat Vayeishev, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, as the guest of Congregation Temple Bethel, a predominantly black Jewish synagogue in Philadelphia.

Thanks to TI's novel Junior Toastmasters class, 17 pre-teens now beam with confidence in their public speaking abilities. They recently exhibited their new expertise in a packed sanctuary, filled with beaming parents and grandparents.

The 3rd annual Israel Film Festival, run by the TI Adult Education Committee, will be held on three consecutive Saturday evenings in January. Following each film will be discussion by Israel culture experts plus dessert.
