Sluggish Start for TI Hoopsters Young and Old.........posted Jan 22, 2007
Tikvat Israel's two basketball teams are off to chilly starts this winter.
The men's team, competing in the Montgomery County synagogue league, has dropped its first three contests.
Meanwhile, TI's United Synagogue Youth chapter has entered a coed team for the first time in memory in the Washington-area USY conference. The team went down to defeat in its first game, losing to B'nai Israel. Its second game on Jan. 21 was cancelled by inclement weather.
The men's team, coached by Warren Berger, plays each Sunday morning through March.
In its most recent outing on Jan. 21, TI dropped a 82-58 decision to Oseh Shalom. TI scored the most points in the second half (40) that the team has scored in any half for the past few years, according to Berger. David Blum scored in double figures for the TI team with various others putting in between 5 and 10 points: Will Hochman, Jon Urban, Damon Ehrlich, Marc Schneider, David Green and Berger.
On Jan. 14, TI lost to Shaare Tefila, 66-41. High scorers were Hochman, Blum and Schneider.
TI lost its first game, 53-39, to B'nai Shalom. "A poor shooting first half did us in, although we played them exactly even in the second half," said Berger, adding the team got a boost from its newcomers Hochman, Green and Urban. Returning stars Blum and Mark Bardeski led TI in scoring (as they did many games last year).
The USY team plays its games every Sunday evening at Hoover Middle School against other chapters. The TI team is coached by Damon Ehrlich.
The men's team plays at Magruder High School. Remaining regular season games are as follows:
- Jan 28, 10:30 a.m., Tikvat Israel vs. Shaare Torah Blue
- Feb 4, 10:30 a.m., Shaare Tefila Blue vs. Tikvat Israel
- Feb 11, 8:30 a.m., B'nai Shalom White vs. Tikvat Israel
- Feb 18, 9:30 a.m., Tikvat Israel vs. Oseh Shalom B
- Feb 25, 10:30 a.m., Shaare Torah Red vs. Tikvat Israel
- March 4, 8:30 a.m., Tikvat Israel vs. B'nai Shalom Purple
