Congregant Wins Auto in Hands-on Contest.........posted Jan 29, 2007

A member of TI won a vehicle in the annual "hand-on vehicle" contest at the 2007 Washington Auto Show on Jan. 28.

Avi Guzman, 24, son of Madeline and Jose Guzman of Rockville, Md., won a new Toyota Rav4 by being the final contestant to keep a hand non-stop on a new vehicle at the show, which ran for four days at the Washington Convention Center.

He then immediately donated his valuable prize to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which will rafflle it off as a fund-raiser. He told WTOP he has a friend who lost two sisters to suicide.

"I feel really good about being able to help with that," Avi said. "Suicide is something that affects a lot more people than you or I might think."

The foundation plans to hold a nationwide raffle for Avi's donated vehicle. "I believe it is going to be 1,000 tickets at $50 per ticket, which will pretty much double the value of the car. I think that's great!" he said.

Avi gained a little temporary fame when WTOP broadcast a story about his conquest. WTOP has an article, audio and photo on its website: http://wtopnews.com/?nid=25&sid=1046816

Avi has been a synagogue member his entire life, even attending pre-school at TI (when it was known as Beth Tikva).
