Museum Calls for Ashery's Bicentennial Print.........posted Jul 6, 2007

The National Museum for American Jewish History in Philadelphia recently asked TI member Avrum Ashery to donate his last Jewish Bicentennial print design to the museum's collection.

The work represents the last of 100 that were printed in 1976 when it was presented in the White House Rose Garden. It's now in the Smithsonian Bicentennial collection as the only Jewish depiction of the special event.

Ashery's design shows the Liberty Bell, with its crack forming the shofar shape as the two items used to proclaim liberty in Torah times and colonial times. The graphic used the quote in English and the original Hebrew that wraps around the entire shape.

Avrum says the design helps to explain the history of the quote from the book of Leviticus - Vayikrah. Most people had no idea where the bell text came from until this graphic appeared in 1976, he says. The design was used by many Jewish, Christian and military organizations in celebrating 1976.

It is now official American and American Jewish history.
