Sisters Rochelle and Robyn Helzner first performed together in public as elementary school kids, but their joint singing engagements in the many years since have been uncommon affairs.
That makes the 2007 Cantor's Concert at Tikvat Israel a rare treat - a chance to hear two lovely voices in harmony on the songs of the season, as well as a few surprises. This year's event, dubbed "A Helzner Happening: A Concert for Families" takes shape at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the synagogue's social hall.

The newly launched environmental program at Congregation Tikvat Israel in Rockville, Md., is based as much on economic incentives as well as on the desire to reduce the size of the congregation's footprint on the global warming stage.

A delegation of Tikvat Israel members, led by Rabbi Howard Gorin, will travel to Philadelphia on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 to observe Shabbat with Congregation Temple Bethel, an historic African-American synagogue. TI members will spend the entire Shabbat with their hosts and stay in the Philadelphians' homes as overnight guests.

The Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light is bestowing its first Energy Award on TI for the synagogue's major building-wide campaign, led by volunteers, to reduce its energy consumption and impact on the environment.

Three photographs by TI congregant Larry Marc Levine were chosen to be part of joint U.S.-Israel photo competition and exhibit "L'Dor V'Dor (Generation to Generation): A Living Tradition". The exhibit runs until Dec. 11 at the Northern Virginia Jewish Community Center. One photo is a montage of images of four generations of Larry's family.

Nine members of Congregation Tikvat Israel have art works that have been picked for the Guild for Judaic Art's show and sale, Nov. 18 through Dec. 27, at the Jewish Community Center in Rockville.

The Tikvat Israel men's basketball team, which competes in the Montgomery County synagogue basketball league, needs a few new players for its lineup this winter. League play each Sunday morning begins in January.
