The Big Season for Tzedakah Group to Support Causes Near and Far.........posted Apr 6, 2008

Purim and Passover are big moments on the calendar for Tikvat Israel's Tzedakah Havurah.

Around Purim last month, the committee collected $515, which will be added to what has been tallied from the "puske" to make contributions to several designated groups locally and beyond, according to David Gantz, long-time chair of the committee. Other members include Mike Nash, Madeleine Oakley, Dan Jacobs, Hope Kott and Robbi Cohen.

The following have been chosen by the Tzedakah Havurah to receive allocations from the Purim collection and from the Ma'ot Hitteen (sale of Chametz) funds in preparation for Pesach:

* ISRAEL FREE LOAN ASSOCIATION: Nearly a thousand years ago, the sage Maimonides wrote: "A loan is betterthan charity, for it enables one to help himself." From its offices in Jerusalem, they have been bringing this ideal to reality since 1990 (www.freeloan.org.il).

* MAZON, A JEWISH RESPONSE TO HUNGER: Allocates donations from the Jewish community to prevent and alleviatehunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds (www.mazon.org).

* MANNA FOOD BANK OF ROCKVILLE: Collects and distributes food to the needy in our community (www.mannafood.org).

* SHEPHERD'S TABLE OF SILVER SPRING: Provides food, clothing, counseling, medical and other support services toindividuals and families seeking assistance in meeting their basic needs (www.shepherdstable.org).

* B'NAI BRITH'S PROJECT HOPE: Answers the call to "let all who are hungry come and eat" byproviding Passover food or a traditional seder to sick, poor, and elderly Jewsacross the country (www.bnaibrith.org/prog_serv/proj_hope.cfm).

* SOUP KITCHENS IN ISRAEL: SupportMeir Panim (www.mifalchaim.org)and Hazon Yeshaya (www.hazonyeshaya.org)provide daily hunger relief to thousands of needy Israelis for free.

* SOLAR COOKER PROJECT: Women andgirls fleeing the genocide in Darfur are placed in extreme jeopardy when they collect firewood for cooking outside the refugee camps. Jewish World Watch is reducing their vulnerability by providing refugee camps in Chad with solar cookers. This project protects these women and provides them with an environmentally responsible method of cooking (www.jewishworldwatch.org/donate/solarcookerproject.html).
