M'Kom Torah - A Place of Torah

A senior at Middlebury College in Vermont is studying environmental ethics in Judaism and would like to collect the views of Tikvat Israel members. She will be in the Washington area Jan. 13-17 to interview willing congregants at TI. She wants everyone to participate in the study by completing a questionnaire.

A reception to honor Galila Ron-Feder-Amit, a leading Israeli-born author of children's books including The Time Tunnel series, will be staged March 3 from 6:15-7 p.m. in the Tikvat Israel social hall. She will sign copies of her books pre-ordered through the TI Religious School.

To create awareness of congregants with disabilities, TI will observe its annual Inclusion Shabbat on Jan. 26. The parent of an adult daughter who lives in a local group home for people will disabilities will be the guest speaker.

Rabbi Howard Gorin will be taking an unusual road trip in February to address Jewish communities across the Deep South about his African adventures. His speaking tour is sponsored by the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life in Jackson, Miss.

Competing in the Montgomery County Synagogue League, TI's men's basketball team has had some competitive encounters in its first three setbacks, but the team has six more chances to reach the win column this winter.

Through an overwhelming voice vote of support, members of Tikvat Israel approved an agreement to become the new home of the Hebrew Day Institute at a well-attended congregational meeting on Jan. 27.

There's a new fashion on Shabbats at Tikvat Israel, and it has nothing to do with the latest tweeds or stylish prayer shawls worn by congregants.
Rather, TI members have taken with great gusto to the weekly study of a Torah portion following Kiddush and shared greetings in the social hall. Typically, the sessions that follow in the Flax Library attact two dozen or more congregants - some who admittedly skip Shacharit but time their arrival at the synagogue accordingly to partake in a lively discussion and analysis of a parashah.
