Playoff Defeat Ends Season for Synagogue Softballers.........posted Jun 18, 2008

The Tikvat Israel men's softball team ended its 2008 season in defeat, losing in the first round of the post-season playoffs of the Montgomery County synagogue conference. It was the team's first time in the playoffs since 2005.

The TI softballers, who put together an unexpected seven-game winning streak in mid-season, dropped a lopsided 15-3 playoff contest to B'nai Sholom White at Wood Middle School on June 29 before losing a 15-13 game the same day to B'nai Israel White in the consolation round.

With a 9-9 record in the regular season, TI tied for 14th place among the league's 22 competing synagogue teams. The top 16 finishers advanced to the conference playoffs.

TI's highlights came in May with doubleheader sweeps against Temple Emanuel, Ohev Shalom and Kehilat Shalom and a two-game split with Shaare Torah Silver.

The team has had other close calls. In a deadlocked game against B'nai Israel, TI filled the bases with no outs in the final inning, only to strand all runners and watch the opponents respond with four runs in the next frame. However, it most recent outing was crushing 23-5 defeat at the hands of Beth Ami Blue.

TI Coach Wil Hochman did not respond to several requests for details about his team's key performers on the playing field.

TI finished in 19th place in the league standings in both 2006 and 2007.

All members of the TI must have a financial commitment to the synagogue ? either as a dues-paying member or as parent of a child enrolled in the religious school or early childhood program.
