Visiting Scholar to Spend March Weekend at TI.........posted Mar 2, 2008
Rabbi Burton Visotzky, Appleman Professor of Midrash and Interreligious Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary, will be the featured presenter at Tikvat Israel's annual Jack Rosen Memorial Scholars Weekend March 28-29.
He will speak on the topic "Engaging the Other: Christianity and Islam in the 21st Century."
The schedule for the weekend is as follows:
- Friday, March 28 - Erev Shabbat program with dinner and lecture, "Cairo to Qatar: Recent Developments in Jewish-Muslim Interfaith Dialogue"
- Saturday, March 29, morning and afternoon program, "And Then I Told the Pope - New Insights into Catholic-Jewish Relations," based on the speaker's tenure as a professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome last Spring
- Saturday, March 29, following Shabbat luncheon, "Isaac Unbound - Three Religions Read the Akedah"
Registration in advance is required for Erev Shabbat dinner. Cost per adult: $18. Cost per child (ages 5 - 18): $8 (maximum per family $40). Send payment to the TI office in advance.
No charge for Shabbat lunch, but a headcount by the TI office staff is needed several days in advance.
Visotzky is active in Jewish-Christian-Muslim dialogue internationally, in capitals such as Washington, Rome, Cairo and Qatar. His articles and reviews have been published in America, Europe and Israel.
With Bill Moyers, Visotzky developed 10 hours of television for PBS on the book of Genesis, serving as consultant and a featured on-screen participant. The series, Genesis: A Living Conversation, premiered in October 1996. Visotzky was also a consultant to Jeffrey Katzenberg of DreamWorks SKG for their 1998 film, Prince of Egypt.
He is the author of nine books, and his novel A Delightful Compendium of Consolation: A Fabulous Tale of Romance, Adventure, & Faith in the Medieval Mediterranean, was published last fall.
Visotzky received his master's degree in education from Harvard University and his M.A., rabbinic ordination, Ph.D., and honorary doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He is the founding rabbi of the egalitarian worship service of the JTS synagogue.
