TI Basketballers Surpass 2008 Productivity With Early Successes.........posted Jan 25, 2009

With two victories already under its collective belt, the Tikvat Israel men's basketball team has surpassed its productivity of a year ago.

Playing in the Montgomery County Synagogue Men's Basketball League, TI has raced to a 2-2 record, its latest triumph coming on Jan. 25, a 69-42 win over the Shaare Torah White team.

In 2008, TI didn't win its first until the opening round of the post-season tournament.

In the most recent win, high scorers were Will Hochman (who was hot from beyond the three-point arc) and Jon Urban (who had numerous steals and fast break layups). Also scoring significant numbers were Lior Golan (who had many rebounds and inside shots), David Blum (who hit drives and outside shots) and Bruce Ginsberg (who hit outside shots including a banked-in three-pointer). Marc Schneider and Leor did a good job rebounding, even though the other team had taller guys.

Two weeks earlier, Tikvat Israel beat up Temple Isaiah II, 69-40. "We were down by two at halftime, but pulled away in the second half by running and substituting frequently," said Coach Warren Berger. "We had 10 guys and the opponents had only 6. We kept getting open shots and making them."

TI opened its season in early January with a 29-point defeat. The team plays nine games in the 12-team syngagogue league, with playoffs starting in March. All games are scheduled on Sunday mornings at Magruder High School. Updated standings and game schedules are accessible at http://www.synagogue-softball.org/basketball.htm

The full roster for TI includes: Warren Berger (coach), Bruce Ginsburg, David Blum, David Green, Damon Ehrlich, Jeremy Ehrlich, Jeff Kahn, Jon Urban, Lior Golan, Marc Schneider, Mark Bardeski, Neil Kram and Will Hochman.
