Our Synagogue Seeks Adults for Basketball and Softball Teams.........posted Oct 16, 2009
Did your Jewish New Year’s resolution involve increased physical activity in 5770?
If so, you may be ready to compete athletically for Congregation Tikvat Israel. The synagogue fields teams in basketball in the winter and softball in the spring. TI competes against other shuls in countywide recreation leagues in both sports. The leagues play all games on Sunday mornings - basketball over the winter, softball in the spring.
The TI basketball team had a successful start to the 2008-09 season in the Montgomery County Synagogue Men's Basketball League. The TI team captured two of its first four games before finishing the year 2-7. (By comparison, one year earlier the team did not win a regular season game.)
“We were successful at surviving the season without any major injuries!” quipped Warren Berger, who will return the basketball squad’s player-coach.
The team plays nine games in local high school gyms from the beginning of January until mid-March. The league maintains a website: http://www.synagogue-softball.org/basketball.htm.
Anyone interested should contact Berger soon. He can be reached at warren.berger@gmail.com. You must be male and at least 18 years of age and be affiliated in some respect with the synagogue.
If softball is more your speed, you can represent our shul in that sport.
Tikvat Israel fields a men's softball team in the Montgomery County Synagogue Softball League, which runs from the first weekend in April through mid-June.
The team started its season strong in 2009, winning two of its first four games before settling for a final 2-12 won-loss mark and 23rd place in the league standings. In 2008, Tikvat Israel placed 14th in the league standings, 19th in both 2007 and 2006. The synagogue league had 24 teams in 2009.
Will Hochman coaches the TI softballers, and he would welcome new players for next spring’s squad. Contact the coach at whochman@aol.com for more details.
