Tikvat Israel's Boy Scout Troop Honors Three High-Flying Eagles.........posted Oct 29, 2009
Three members of Boy Scout Troop 1948, sponsored by Congregation Tikvat Israel, have earned the highest rank of Eagle, having completed voluminous requirements, including a service project.
An Eagle Scout Board of Review has found Scott Goodin, David Zuckerman and Joshua Greenwald worthy of the rank of Eagle Scout.
The trio will be honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Sunday, Nov. 1 (4-6 p.m.) at the synagogue's social hall.
To achieve Eagle Scout rank, each young man completed at least 21 merit badges and planned, developed and led others in a service project that benefited his congregation, community or school. Only four percent of Scouts attain Eagle Scout, the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America. Those honored were:
* Scott Goodin, son of Doug and Mary Goodin of Rockville. Scott is a senior at Georgetown Day School. He is interested in film, theater lighting and psychology and plans to major in film. He first joined scouting in October 2002 and joined Troop 1948 in September 2003. His Eagle project was planning and carrying out a horticultural project for our congregation.
* David Zuckerman, son of Steve and Joanne Zuckerman of Rockville. David is a freshman at the University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in physics. He has been a member of Troop 1948 since 2002. For his Eagle Project, David planned and managed the clean up and organization of the archives room at B'nai Israel Congregation in Rockville.
* Joshua Greenwald, son of Jeff Greenwald and Sherry Marlowe of Montgomery Village. Joshua joined Troop 1948 in June 2003 after receiving his Arrow of Light from Pack 276. He attends the math/science/computer science magnet program at Poolesville High School, and his primary interest is in a medical career. His Eagle Project entailed organizing the packing and unpacking of materials for the move of Hebrew Day Institute from Wheaton to its present location at Congregation Tikvat Israel in Rockville.
Troop 1948 provides a complete scouting experience in a Jewish context. Scouts come from all parts of Montgomery County and represent a broad spectrum of religious observance. The troop is shomer shabbat v'kashrut (observes the Sabbath and the kosher dietary laws) in all its activities so that all Jewish Scouts as well as other Saturday Sabbath observers can participate in, and benefit from, the Scouting program. Troop 1948 has an active outdoor program with monthly campouts, bike trips, ski trips and hikes. The troop attends Boy Scout Summer Camp with Kosher dining and Jewish services.
The troop's website is www.troop1948.org. Raymond Horn is the scoutmaster of Troop 1948. He can be contacted at 443-253-0605 or scoutmaster@troop1948.org.
