Danny Balin, the adult son of Tikvat Israel members Janice and Robert Balin of Rockville, is making quite a stir on the professional golfing front this summer. With a spectacular round in the qualifying tournament in Hershey, Pa., in mid-July, Danny has advanced to the Professional Golf Association championship tournament (also known as the PGA) in August outside of Atlanta, Ga.

The Joint USY/Kadima chapter of Tikvat Israel and Shaare Tefila is receiving a 2011 Solomon Schechter award for outstanding programming. The competition's Silver Award will be presented at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism's 2011 Kallah, an international conference, in December in San Diego, Calif.

Two daughters of longtime Tikvat Israel members, Rachel Freedenberg Leibold and Dara Kahn, are proving their outstanding talents as prize-winning journalists, having received national recognition this summer in the 2011 Simon Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism. The American Jewish Press Association sponsors the annual competition for outstanding reporting, writing and electronic publications.
