Tikvat Israel congregants, former members and other friends turned out in full force to recognize one of the congregationís founding members, Charlotte Zeidman, by renaming the synagogue kitchen in her memory.
The recognition was made public at a tribute dinner in the TI Social Hall on March 18 in front of her four children and several of her grandchildren. A plaque bearing Zeidmanís name will appear adjacent to the kitchen entrance.
The event, attended by nearly 175 individuals, grossed more than $7,100, which included generous donations from those who could not attend. †The net proceeds will be used to upgrade aspects of the kitchen.

Both Tikvat Israel basketball teams – the men’s team and the USY team – enjoyed highly successful 2012 seasons that led them to their respective championship games. The combined TI/Shaare Tefila team in the USY league fell by four points in overtime to B'nai Sholom of Olney in the title contest, while the men’s team, which competes in the Montgomery County synagogue league, lost in the finals of the Division II bracket.

As part of the commemoration of Rabbi Gorin's three decades of service to Tikvat Israel, the congregation will present him with a personal memory book of private expressions of thanks and recollections. This is the time to submit a personal note of reflection, appreciation or even humor for the memory book. Tikvat Israel will honor its 2012 high school and collegiate graduates during Shabbat morning services on May 12, followed by a Simcha kiddush, sponsored in part by the graduates' families. Mazel Tov to those receiving their diplomas and degrees this spring. A complete list of graduates follows.

Larry Gorban has notified the Tikvat Israel Board of Directors that he will leave the synagogue's presidency effective July 1. He will be succeeded until Dec. 31 by a pair of co-presidents, Rodney Matheson and Jonathan Solomon. The next round of elections will take place at year's end for top officers and governing board members.

Dr. Herman J. Flax, one of the most loyal and dedicated financial backers of Tikvat Israel Congregation for more than two decades, passed away on April 26 at the age of 95.
Preferring to be called by his middle name Jacob, he joined what was then Beth Tikva in 1991 with his wife Melanie Grishman. They did so after hearing Cantor Rochelle Helzner perform at a Jewish Folk Arts Festival with her sister Robyn.
Services will be held in the Tikvat Israel sanctuary at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, with interment following at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney. His family is observing shiva at his former residence until Wednesday, May 2.
