Mahzor Lev Shalem

Dear Fellow Congregants,

For the next High Holidays, Tikvat Israel will have the pleasure of worshipping from a new prayerbook, the soon-to-be-published Mahzor Lev Shalem, an updated Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur prayerbook that promises to deepen our shared experience over the Days of Awe.

Our current High Holiday prayerbook, the "Silverman Mahzor", known for its editor Rabbi Morris Silverman, was originally published in 1939. This prayerbook has served Tikvat Israel well for decades, but Mahzor Lev Shalem has been designed to provide a traditional High Holiday service more oriented towards modern worshippers. Among the features of the Mahzor Lev Shalem are:

  • A new updated translation that is faithful to the Hebrew, yet reflecting contemporary use of language,
  • Commentaries, on the same page as the text, from both ancient and modern scholars to explain the historical, liturgical, and spiritual context of the prayers,
  • Hebrew font designed to ease eye strain, and
  • A book that is lightweight, but durable.
The decision to adopt the Mahzor Lev Shalem has been carefully reviewed by the Religious Practices Committee and has the strong endorsement of Rabbi Gorin and Cantor Helzner. To learn more about Mahzor Lev Shalem, view pages from it online, and see why it has impressed so many visit the Rabbinical Assembly's website.

The Rabbinical Assemply website provides answers to frequently asked questions about the Mahzor Lev Shalem and has posted sample pages.

The decision to adopt a new mahzor has quickly generated excitement, and many members of the synagogue have generously pledged their support. However to ensure that Tikvat Israels financial stability matches our spiritual vitality, we need your support.

Please support this effort by purchasing at least one copy, using either of the following methods:

In addition to your purchase of copies for you and your family, please consider purchasing additional copies for others in our broader community.

This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize and remember your loved ones. Each mahzor you purchase will include a bookplate with your inscription.

If we all contribute a little, it will go a long way to a more profound communal experience on the upcoming High Holidays.

Sincerely,

Sam Freedenberg
