Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh is the senior shlicha (Israeli emissary) for the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington in partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel. As an Israeli Druze politician and a journalist, Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh has a history of breaking barriers.
Born to a Druze family in the village of Daliyat al-Karmel on Mount Carmel, Kamal-Mreeh served as the first Druze woman to anchor a Hebrew-language news program on Israeli television, the first female Druze member of Israel’s legislature (from April 2019-April 2021), and now, as the first Druze to serve as an Israeli emissary for the Jewish Agency. Kamal-Mreeh balances national and local responsibilities to forge meaningful connections between Israel and world Jewry.
Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh will be speaking about “Who are We, the ‘Non-Jewish’ Communities in Israel?” More than 25% of Israeli citizens are identified as Arab or “Other”, which includes 147,000 Druze. She will speak about the various minorities in Israel, helping us to understand their characteristics, differences, social changes, challenges, and aspirations.
